Best Practices for Remote Employees


What do you think about the IT team to do a best practices call for remote employees on maintaining their company laptops? This would be especially beneficial now with the COVID-19 outbreak.


I recently got the laptop upgraded to the latest 64bit Office365 version 2002 and it is working much better. In this post i will be sharing a lot of great practices with to keep your laptops running in tip top shape.  


If you know you will be working away from the office please try to ensure you take the following with you:
  • Office laptop - this should not be left in the office unsecured under normal circumstances
  • Laptop charging cable
  • Headset and/or portable speakerphone device
Tools needed to work remotely - it is strongly recommended you check these tools while in the office:

    Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA - or sometimes called two-factor authentication), is an advanced security layer included with Office 365. The first time you try to access the company network away from an office you will be automatically prompted to set this up.
  • Ensure any files are stored in Office 365: OneDrive for Business, SharePoint, or Microsoft Teams.
  • VPN client - All laptops will automatically have this installed, however it is advisable to check by searching your Windows start menu for AnyConnect while in an office before working remotely:
Some of the recommendations are below:

  • Connect to company VPN on a regular basis and leave the computer running overnight to get latest MSFT critical updates pushed to your laptop. 

  • Open the Software Center application to update all applications.

  • If you have a Dell laptop open the SupportAssist application every month to check for drivers, BIOS, and clean up temp files (Click Run All Tests).

  • If you have a Lenovo laptop open the SystemUpdate application every month to update drivers, BIOS, and applications.

  • If you have an Apple MacBook verify you are on the latest MAC OSX and check Software Update in system settings.

  • Verify all your office applications are on the latest version.
    • Click Office Account in Outlook and then compare your version to the version on the web.
  • Verify you are logged into all of your office applications with your company official email account

  • Make sure all of your files are stored on OneDrive or a SharePoint site.
    • Verify OneDrive application is signed in and syncing successfully.

  • Set your default IM App to your preffered IM application (e.g Microsoft Teams)
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\IM Providers in registry editor

  • If you are joining WebEx meetings make sure you are signing in using your company official email account

    • Downloading the Desktop App and Productivity Tools allow you to one click schedule, start, and join meetings with your company account.
